Growing Gracefully

As I prayed and told God of my frustrations with not getting the things I wanted quickly, the words “grow gracefully” hushed me like an embarrassed child being disciplined in public.

I sat in silence and began to visualize a ballerina and how they move when performing a piece that they have rehearsed again and again.  Ballerinas move in a way that appears to be easy, light and full of poise. Though many of the movements they do are admired by many, behind the scenes they are learning to endure through many uncomfortable positions and push through  discomfort. Only in their perseverance and commitment to perfecting their craft are ballerinas able to Grand Jete, walk “en pointe” and assemble with ease when performing.

After I got over my hurt feelings of not being where I expected to be as I neared the end of another year, I decided that going forward I’d make it a priority to grow gracefully. A lot of the let downs and disappointments that I faced in the past year were mentally challenging and I truthfully began to doubt myself and question if I was capable enough. Doubt was coupled with a negative attitude and sense of discontentment.  On the outside, everything may have appeared to be fine, but I was stomping, yelling and crying hysterically on the inside.

I have come to the realization that just like a ballerina, life is made of practices and performances. In order to nail the performance, we have to go through obstacles, challenges, and disappointments to grow.  Obstacles teach us to endure, challenges reveal what we are made of and disappointments show us how to persevere.  Without practice, we won’t be prepared mentally, emotionally or physically for the victories ahead of us and may even take the high moments for granted.

In the first chapter of 2019, I am excited for all of the endless possibilities and blessings that await me, my friends and family. No matter what challenges lie ahead, remember that the presence of a challenge precedes a victory. Whatever your goals may be in this New Year, you can and will accomplish the things you have set out to achieve!
